Feeling Anti-Rundown -- If you really hate running you should probably run
If you really hate running it is probably because your cardio is bad or because you are going way to hard or both 1) Indicates that you could really benefit from running 2) indicates you like going fast and you might enjoy being able to
If you don't like feeling rundown, you know the way you do if you have just exerted yourself, say if you have been running and you hate running or you had a packed day of travel, walking around museums and exploring a city.
If you know what I am getting at you know it can really suck it doesn't feel good. It feels a similar sort of way coming off a cold, or after a poor night's sleep, after jet lag, after social overload for an introvert or isolation for an introvert. - Body feels heavy and sluggish, dull aches, unrefreshing sleep - Drifting focus and thoughts, feeling foggy or delayed - Feeling flat or irritable - Everything feels like a big deal chores and messages provoke hesitation, small decisions and tasks feel oddly difficult - You crave rest, sugar, or caffeine, your head feels heavy, eyes strained, and the world feels slightly weighted.
You have a certain baseline and you feel decidedly below. The day is a slog you don't get a lot done, or have to use a lot of will power and fortitude to power through.
What if I told you you can change that baseline though. That you can have a step in the opposite cardinal direction, that you can feel lighter then usual more energetic, clear, emotionally steady motivated etc.. If your baselines were higher you would feel after an exhausting day how you feel after a typical day now, and in comparison it will be bad! - Body feels light and good, sleep is restful - Focused and sharp - Little things are a breeze - Feel satiated, relaxed
Basically if you hate all that stuff you might associate with running and the way the physical exertion makes you feel afterwards you are not alone but if you want less of those thing in your life, counter-intuitivly you are better off running than not! People maybe talk about running and extol it, it sounds sort of BS and culty, maybe holier than tho, pretentious, preachy. They may say they feel so good motivated etc. but it sounds BS, you got up early to run of course you are motivated confused causal arrow! But there are very real, physical, emotional, psychological effects behind it, it just so happens that a direct description of those things sounds that way.
The feeling is not relatable but feeling run down is something people are much more familiar with and provides a useful reference point by contrast.
There is also the matter of the acute version: - Running feel actively painful - Maybe your gums hurt, you get a headache, your lungs feel burning, your muscles feel extremely sore, your stomach feels agitated, you feel nauseous.
Granted this sort of thing does not come up so much in day to day life outside of dedicated exercise sessions. However as your cardio improves these things will not happen unless you are going truly all out. Meaning specifically, 1) You can get a lot closer to going all out without feeling that way 2) The speed you can go without feeling that way goes way up 3) That sort of experience is not typical of the vast majority of running the vast majority of runners are doing
So you can go fast! And you can enjoy the process of getting faster, it getting easier to go fast, by and large without the pain once associated with what you now consider slow.
On top of that there are myriad benefits that are not specific to if you currently hate running: - General better sports performance for just about any sport (assuming you are improving your cardio by running) - Lower all cause mortality - Better sleep - Easier time with day-to-day tasks/happenings like walking, carrying groceries, helping your friends move
But all of this is in my opinion already well expressed. What's not is the gap between the belabored point of the believers and the lived experience of the skeptics. My answer -- You hate feeling run down so run-up and feel anti-rundown!
